AbstractIn the traditional Oliver-Pharr method, the nanoindentation unloading data is described with an empirical power law. With this power law, the contact stiffness can be determined only at the peak load. In this paper, a new function, which relates the normalized depth with normalized load, was proposed to describe the nanoindentation unloading data. Analyzing the nanoindentation data measured on soda-lime glass confirmed that this new function is universal and can be used to determine the contact stiffness corresponding to any arbitrary depth/load with the experimental data recorded during the loading segment of a nanoindentation test. Using the contact stiffness determined based on this new function, the Young's modulus and hardness were calculated as continuous functions of load. It was proved that the calculated results are comparable to those measured with continuous stiffness measurements.
