Organosilicon chains strengthened flexible graphene aerogel with improved compression modulus and tunable functionality

AbstractThe idea of increasing the mechanical strength of graphene aerogel (GA) and achieving more reliable application performance has aroused wide attention recently. A solution to this challenge is to reinforce the framework of aerogel by adding enhancers to the initial graphene oxide (GO) solution. Herein, organosilicon chains strengthened compressible GA was fabricated in a facile and low-cost method by introducing tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the reinforce agent. The effects of TEOS on the porous microstructure and mechanical properties of GA were systematically studied, and the best mechanical performance obtained at the mass ratio of TEOS to GO equal to 3:1. The final well-structured TEOS-3 aerogel exhibits a maximum compression modulus of 29 kPa, which is higher than that reported in previous works. In addition, it showed an excellent hydrophobicity (contact angle, 131.71 degrees), a high adsorption capacity (72 times of its own weight) and excellent regeneration capacity for toluene, a good electrical conductivity of similar to 0.1 S-m(-1) and a low density of 15.56 mg.cm(-3). This work might provide hints for the large-scale preparation and practical application of graphene aerogel with more reliable application performance.
