Preparation and Rheological Properties of HfO2Aqueous Slurry

AbstractThe effects of pH value and the dispersant polyethyleneimine (PEI) content on the stability and rheological properties of HfO2aqueous slurry were investigated. The results indicate that, as a cationic dispersant, PEI can combine with H+to form some charged [-CH2-CH2-NH2+-] groups, which adsorb on the surface of HfO2particles and make it positively charged. As a result, the pH value at isoelectric point of the slurry increases from 6.2 to 11.2. As PEI added, the viscosity of HfO2aqueous slurry decreases initially and then increases when the mass fraction of PEI exceeds over 0.1%. Besides, the viscosity of slurry increases with the increase of solid loading, especially when the volume fraction of solid loading is greater than 30%. The HfO2aqueous slurry with a low viscosity and a highly stability is obtained at pH value of 3, mass fraction of PEI of 0.1%, and solid loading of 30%. A composite with HfO2volume fraction of 15% is obtained by impregnating the preform using the optimized HfO2aqueous slurry. © 2017, Editorial Department of Journal of the Chinese Ceramic Society.
